C7) Waiver for Expired Driving License has now lapsed

The Ministry of Transport and Communications informs the public that the old Botswana Driving license (RV14-Booklet) was nullified on June 27th 2007 as per the statutory instrument No: of 2006.

The Road Traffic Act granted a grace period of two (2) years from the commencement of the Act for drivers holding the old drivers license to convert them to new ones without undertaking a fresh driving test. The prescribed period has now elapsed and as such the Department of Road Transport and Safety cannot permit conversion without subjecting drivers to a new test.

The public is further informed that if the card is not renewed it attracts a penalty of P20.00 per day including weekends and holidays. However the Ministry is in the process of revising this provision in the Road Traffic Act (Regulations) in order to allow the Director to waive penalties under certain circumstances.

Currently no appeal to the Minister will result in the penalties being waived.
